The Fallen

The Gulf War Memorial, located at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire, commemorates the 47 British military personnel who lost their lives during Operation Granby (the UK name for the first Gulf War) in 1990-1991.

• Unveiling: The memorial was unveiled on February 28, 2016, 25 years after the conflict ended.
• Design: It features three pillars representing the three branches of the British Armed Forces (Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force) and includes 47 paving stones, each bearing the name of one of the fallen.
• Commemoration: The inscription honours the 47 fallen, those who fought in the liberation of Kuwait, and veterans who have passed away since the war.
• Funding: The £70,000 memorial was commissioned by The Gulf War Memorial Trust Appeal (GWMTA), with funding from charitable events and the Kuwaiti government.
• Symbolism: Beneath the centre stone, which bears the image of the reverse of the Gulf Medal, are 48 poppies: 47 for the fallen, and one for veterans who passed away after the conflict.

The memorial provides a permanent place of remembrance for families and veterans of the conflict.

The inscription reads: "In memory of the 47 fallen comrades, and to all those who fought in Operation Granby (1990-91) The Liberation of Kuwait, those who have subsequently passed away and also those that continued to fight their own battles, long after the guns fell silent. Lest we Forget".
